MONUMENTAL PERSPECTIVES

Engaging local artists in reimagining the role that monuments play in communicating historical legacies. Selected artists partnered with the museum’s curators and designers from Snap and LACMA to conceptualize, prototype, and produce site-specific AR monuments in historic locations around Los Angeles.

Although artist collaborators were selected by application, a narrative-first approach allowed the artists to expand or diverge from initial ideas based on the explorations carried out alongside the cross-disciplinary team from LACMA and Snap.

Cross-Disciplinary

In contrast to the glacial bureaucracy associated with physical monuments, digital prototyping enabled a fluid process, that resulted in a more thoughtful and representative monument.

Process > Product

“The timely initiative explores key moments and figures in the region’s past and present, and interprets the traditional notions of monumentality through the lens of augmented reality.”

The project’s success transformed a one-off collaboration into a multi-year sponsored initiative that has continued to support emerging artists engaging in conversations around community representation through the lens of Augmented Reality.

CONTINUING LEGACY

Artist collaborators for the first collection of Monumental Perspectives were I.R.Bach, Mercedes Dorame, Glenn Kaino + Ruben Ochoa, and Ada Pinkston.

Technical modeling contributions were made by Snaps Lens Creators Michael French, Sutu, James Hurlbut, and Sallia Goldstein.

Curatorial support was contributed by Diana Magaloni, Rita Gonzalez, Liz Andrews, and Deliasofia Zacarias.
