A smart home controller that reintroduces physical connection to the connected home through the use of natural materials and tactile interactions.

Moment Cube

Product Design ■ 09.2022 – 10.2022

The soft organic forms were crafted through a multistep CNC process that hides the contained technical componentry behind carefully placed seams. The use of magnets not only eliminates the need for batteries, but also provides a satisfying tactile effect between Cube and Tray, ensuring consistent alignment and performance.

Process

The Moment Cube enables interactions with your smarthome without conventional mechanisms, like screens, microphones, and cables.  The tray’s integrated magnetic sensors read the Cube’s orientation without the use of visible technology. The absence of microphones and cameras means that the Moment Cube isn’t looking back at you.

INVISIBLE TECH

The soft organic forms were crafted through a multistep CNC process that hides the technical components behind carefully placed seams. The use of magnets eliminates the need for batteries and cables, while amplifying the tactility of interactions with the Moment Cube, ensuring consistent alignment and performance.

DEMO UNIT

A functional micro-apartment prototype enabled live demoes of themed Moments and a simplified communication with users. Configurable Moments like Morning mode, Party mode, and Relaxation mode activate lighting, music, and furniture configurations, components across the home.

Collaborating designers on this project include John Brechbill, Jeremy Chen, and Wonjoon Oh.
